On March 7, 2016 the Russian Federation and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg celebrate the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Russian Empire and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

In the middle of the nineteenth century Russia was one of the guarantors of the borders of the Grand Duchy and its neutrality. Diplomatic relations between Russia and Luxembourg were installed on March 7, 1891 (the Grand Duchy gained its independence in 1867), with the Soviet Union — in 1935 (interrupted by the World War II, resumed in 1946).

On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Russian Empire and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov has sent to his colleague Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn a congratulatory letter.
