Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn participated Jan. 20 at the UN Security Council in New York in the high-level public debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.

Regarding Syria, Minister Asselborn welcomed the forthcoming Geneva II Conference. This Conference is the only way to stop hostilities and violence and to engage a political settlement of the crisis on the basis of a comprehensive and complete implementation of the Geneva Communique of 30 June 2012 . The minister stressed the need to make a significant progress in terms of the humanitarian access to Syria. First of all, the Security Council should take responsibility and adopt a humanitarian resolution. Jean Asselborn received from the Secretary General of the UN an invitation to Geneva II Conference.

The Minister also attended the monthly working lunch of the Security Council with members and the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki -moon. The discussions focused on the situation in Syria, the Central African Republic and South Sudan.
