J.Asselborn at the EU Council of «Foreign Affairs» in Brussels
The Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn attended the Council of «Foreign Affairs» of the European Union on 27 of May 2013 in Brussels.
The Council of «Foreign Affairs» began his formal session with an introduction by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on Somalia following the recent London conference. The High Representative also reported on the last stage of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and negotiations in the format of E3 +3 with Iran, discussed the situation of growing concern in the Central African Republic.
The 27 foreign ministers of the EU then had a debate on Syria. The discussions were focused on the question of sanctions of the European Union, that will expire on June 1, 2013. Ministers recalled the importance to do everything possible to promote a political solution to the conflict in Syria and welcomed in this context a joint initiative of the United States and Russia calling for the international conference on Syria. The ministers discussed the terms of the extension of EU sanctions on Syria.
In addition 27 foreign ministers attended a working lunch, which was devoted to the security and defense policy of the EU.
