J.Asselborn at the UN Security Council
The Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn made a working visit to the United Nations in New York on 17 of June 2013.
Minister Asselborn participated in the high-level segment of the UN Security Council on the topic «Children and Armed Conflicts», organized under the UK Presidency on the occasion of the publication of the annual report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the plight of children in armed conflict.
In his speech Minister Asselborn has protested against the situation in Syria, and called for an urgent end to the conflict. He urged the international community, primarily the Security Council, to assume its responsibilities in this area.
Minister Asselborn said it was the duty of the Security Council to take the lead and send a strong signal, if necessary through the imposition of sanctions against those who continue to violate the rights of children.
During his visit in New York Minister Asselborn also met with the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict Leila Zerrougui. They discussed the conflicts in Syria, Central African Republic and Mali.
