The Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn participates in the meeting of Foreign ministers from NATO and ISAF partner nations who are shaping NATO’s long-term support to Afghanistan at a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday (23 April 2013).
Chaired by the Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the North Atlantic Council began its work with a review of developments in the Middle East and North Africa, their implications for the security of the region and the Alliance. The ministers also exchanged views on the situation in Syria and its impact on regional security.
The ministers met in the NATO-Russia Council to discuss framework of the current international security issues in the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. In this context, relations between NATO and Russia, the issue of Afghanistan and the possibilities for further cooperation beyond 2014, as well as an issues of common concern as the situation in Syria and the Middle East or North Korea were discussed.
During a working lunch in the presence of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Common Security Policy Catherine Ashton ministers had an exchange of views on the major challenges for the Alliance after 2014. The debate focused on political strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan after 2014.
