Jean Asselborn at Geneva-II conference
At the invitation of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki -moon, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, participated in the opening ceremony of the second international conference on Syria, called Geneva — II.
The invitation of Luxembourg to the conference was extended thanks to its active involvement as non-permanent Security Council member in the settlement of the Syrian crisis, in particular on both humanitarian and political levels.
The Minister emphasized in his speech the need to urgently reach a negotiated and peaceful solution: «There is no military solution. Only a political solution, a real transition, based on the full implementation of Geneva Communiqué and preserving the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian state, will end this bloody conflict».
During the Conference Jean Asselborn had talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg told to «Le Quotidien»: «I was struck by the moderate speech of Sergei Lavrov. Russia wants to achieve a result», said Jean Asselborn, stressing that Russia can no longer «tolerate humanitarian consequences that last for three years».
