The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Jean Asselborn took part in the 124th session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on May 6, 2014 in Vienna.

Under the theme «The values ​​of the Council of Europe and stability in Europe : current challenges,» the discussions of the Committee of Ministers allowed to take to the account the general situation of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Europe in support of the report presented by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland.

J.Asselborn focused his speech on the situation in Ukraine. He welcomed the release of OSCE observers, in which «Russia has demonstrated a willingness and determination in its influence to contribute to a solution». He recalled the drama of Odessa on 2 May and noted that «the latest developments in the field are concerned that we are on the brink of a civil war in Ukraine».

The Minister noted that the presidential elections of May 25 will be crucial to give all citizens of Ukraine the opportunity to express themselves democratically.

J.Asselborn concluded by reiterating that Ukraine will have to find a balance between Russia and Europe. «It must be sovereign, democratic and prosperous, and all Ukrainian citizens will find their place in this new Ukraine».
