Luxembourg, as all European Union countries, «regretted» the Swiss decision to introduce immigration quotas.

The Luxembourg’s Foreign Affairs Minister Jean Asselborn called on the European Union to defend the freedom of movement for EU workers following Switzerland’s referendum to restrict immigration.

The Foreign Affairs Minister said in an interview with SRW that this principle for freedom of movement must not be «distorted or watered down».

He added that Switzerland’s privileged access to the EU internal market was granted on the condition that workers are subject to free movement.

«I respect the outcome of the Swiss people, but it must also respect the values of the European Union» he said, adding: «You have to accept the choice of the Swiss people, but there will be consequences».
