Reding votes for Juncker

EU Commission Vice-President and Luxembourg national Viviane Reding has announced that she has no plans to run against the Grand Duchy’s former Premier in a bid to lead the EU Commission.

Reding, who also serves as EU Justice Commissioner, said at a press conference in Luxembourg that she fully supports Juncker’s ambitions to become the European People’s Party’s top candidate. Should the EPP win the elections, this would leave the way open for Juncker to succeed José Manuel Barroso as Commission president. “There is a Luxembourg candidate and everyone else is standing behind him to support him,” Reding commented. “It would be ridiculous to run as a counter-candidate against Juncker.” The Commission Vice-President added that Luxembourg should be proud of Juncker, whom she described as a competent personality.
